Britney Arendse: Mullagh’s Para Powerlifting Champion
Mullagh’s very own Britney Arendse continues to make waves on the international stage, representing Ireland at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. Competing in the up-to-79kg para powerlifting class, the 24-year-old secured an impressive fourth-place finish, achieving not just one but three personal bests. Britney’s final lift of 133kg brought visible delight, a testament to her dedication and resilience.
Born in South Africa, Britney moved to Ireland at the age of five, settling with her family in Mullagh, County Cavan. She was always active as a child, with a particular passion for swimming.
A tragic car accident in 2009 left her with a spinal cord injury, but this setback only fuelled her drive to excel in sports.
After trying wheelchair basketball and swimming, Britney found her calling in para powerlifting, inspired by her mother, Brigitte, who was also a successful powerlifter.
Since her debut at the Tokyo 2021 Paralympics, where she finished 7th and set a personal best of 107kg, Britney has gone from strength to strength. Her achievements include multiple medals at the World Para Powerlifting Championships, setting new Junior World Records in the 73kg category, and becoming the first Irish athlete to accomplish such a feat.
The people of Mullagh and Cavan have shown overwhelming support for Britney, who has made an enduring impact both locally and nationally. Her journey is a source of pride and inspiration, not only for her hometown but for Ireland as a whole. With the Paris Paralympics marking yet another milestone in her career, Britney continues to demonstrate an indomitable spirit, showing resilience, strength, and a never-give-up attitude.
