Mullagh Lake has an almost circular shape of half a mile in diameter. It nestles beneath Mullagh Hill, approximately half a mile from the town. It has an abundance of coarse fish and attracts many fishing clubs when they hold their annual competitions.

Tradition has it that the two islands, now known as Crow Island and Sally Island were originally constructed as crannoga. When the water level on the lake is low the stones in the foundation are clearly visible. The trees on the island were planted in the early nineteenth century by the Mortimers, the local landlords. The word crannog, from the Irish crann, meaning a tree, is the name given to an artificial island built near the shore in a shallow part of a lake from layers of timber, brushwood, stone and clay. Frequently rows of oaken posts were driven into the bottom of

the lake to contain the materials. They were dwelling places of the owners of the surrounding land and were very safe places of refuge in time of war.

A third island called Green Island is also interesting as it contains the outlines of two forts or duns. Consequent to the lowering of the

water due to drainage this island is now only a peninsula except in very high floods. The name Green Island may have been a literal translation of the Irish word glas-oileán which means a peninsula.

The Carnival by the Lake

Carnivals were a great attraction in the forties and into the late fifties. Practically every town and parish strove to provide the most attractive venue and the most enticing programme. At some of the carnivals there outdoor amusements, bumping cars, swing boats, chair planes, rifle ranges and “beat the wall of death” for those who wished to have a break from the crowded dance floor. But the real dancing fans would remain on the dance floor and enjoy the music played by some of the best musicians in Ireland.

The staging of a carnival required enormous local effort. Skilled men would be required to erect the marquee to comply with the safety regulations of the time. A local man was employed to look after the structure during the night and well into the early hours of the morning. The marquee could be compared to a ship on the sea as it was very much at the mercy of the weather. If there was too much moisture in the canvas it could tear and would

create a bigger problem for the following night. Yet, a greater danger was a wind storm.

The Carnival at Mullagh Lake was a memorable occasion, to the point of inspiring a local poet:

On the way to the Carnival

Down Longfield road we’d go

St Kilian’s Well we’d

pass

And when

at the Gates we were sure to meet

Our loyal friends from Cross

And there upon the Courthouse Hill

The old folk they would stand

And listen to the music

Of those great old Irish bands

Certainly few carnivals can have a setting comparable in terms of scenery and historic atmosphere to that provided by Mr Brady of Mullagh Glebe. The site overlooked the Green Island surrounded by towering trees and sometimes a swan or two nesting in the reeds. Picture Mullagh Hill with its cloak of yellow and green, the lake shore by the road side, the white iron gates and railings, the winding avenue leading to the marquee and the Tricolour on the rooftop, the coloured lights bobbing in the breeze and the sun sinking in the west casting shadows on the waters. It was like a Patrick Kavavagh dream as the band played on. Everyone seemed in jovial mood enjoying the night.

Most band had eight or nine members usually, a piano player, two bass fiddlers, a saxophonist, a clarinet player, drums and a male and female singer. This set created such a beautiful sound that one hoped it would go on for longer.

Among the excellent bands that played in Mullagh then and throughout the country were Stephen Garvey, Dixons, Flying Carltons, Bert Flynn, Bros Walshe, Denis Cronin, Gay McIntyre and others.

Admission was 2/6d and a season ticket was 27 shillings. Dancing hours were from eight to twelve. Foxtrots, slow waltzes, quick steps, tango and old time waltzes were the dances in those years. The Carnival Queen was crowned on the closing night. The children of the parish were not forgotten either and a dance and fancy dress parade on the Sunday afternoon was the highlight for them.

The carnival was a great source of entertainment for the youth mostly in the rural areas and the not-so-young enjoyed the lovely music and song. Carnivals are a thing of the past now, but the memories remain. (Portrait of a Parish, 1988)

In 2006, Mullagh Tourism & Community Development Committee formed a sub-committee with a view to creating a children’s playground. The then parish priest Fr. John Quinn and the Diocese of Kilmore very kindly donated the site. The project commenced in 2007, costing in excess of €130,000. Cavan County Council and the Dept of Children provided

€87,000 with the remaining €43,000 raised locally. Mullagh Tourism & Community Development Committee (Fair Day) donated over €20,000 to

the project. The playground was open on the 8^th March 2008 and has provided endless hours of entertainment for children from far and near.

The oldest known church in the parish of Mullagh was the Catholic Church, Teampall Cheallaigh “the Church of Ceallach,” the original Gaelic form of the name Kilian. It is situated close to the Mullagh town on the rise above the lake, adjacent to the present Church of Ireland. The ruins which still stand in the churchyard are reputed to be that of the old church and suggest a small building with rectangular windows, apparently finished with plaster, a fire place and a chimney.

Teampall Cheallaigh served as parish church during the time of

the O’Reilly Clan; it was under their patronage and was the burial place of its members.

The old graveyard of Teampall Cheallaigh dates back to pre-Reformation times-circa 14^th century. Exploration of these historic grounds takes one back

through the past centuries as the site has been used as a burial place of our ancestors. The oldest gravestone is that of Philip O’Reilly who died on February 1^st 1683. Saint Kilian, also spelled Killian or Cillian

was born in Mullagh, Co. Cavan in 640 A.D. in Cloughballybeg, a short distance south-east of where his Holy Well is now situated.

He eventually his own monastic foundation of Kilmakilloge harbour in the Kenmare

area, from where he and

his companions left Ireland and were directed by Pope Conan to Germany.

He became an Irish missionary bishop and the apostle of Franconia (nowadays the

northern part of Bavaria), where he began his labors towards the end of the 7th century.

There are several biographies of him. The oldest texts which refer to him are an 8th century necrology at Würzburg and the notice by Hrabanus Maurus in his martyrology.

According to Maurus, Kilian was a native of Ireland, whence with eleven companions he went to eastern Franconia and Thuringia.

After having preached the Gospel in Würzburg, he succeeded in converting to Christianity the local lord, Duke Gozbert, and much of the population.

There came a time when Kilian told the Duke that he was in violation of sacred scripture by having an affair with his brother’s widow, Geilana. Geilana heard of Kilian’s words, and, furious at his interference in her domestic affairs, hired two assassins to murder Kilian and his two companions, Colman and Totnan, while Gosbert was away hunting. The year was around 689 A.D.

From the time that his relics were first enshrined in the cathedral of Würzburg, his cult spread throughout Central Europe, ultimately to Italy, Great Britain and further afield.

The elevation of the relics of the three martyrs was performed by Burchard, the first Bishop of Würzburg.

The skulls of the three martyrs were inlayed with precious stones and carefully preserved to this day.

On St Kilian’s day, a glass case containing the three skulls is removed from a crypt, paraded through the streets before large crowds, and put on display in the town’s cathedral (Sankt-Kiliansdom). Statues of these three saints (among others) line the famous Saint’s Bridge across the Main River.

A well-stocked exhibition area opens onto a small video theatre where one

may view a short film on the life of St. Kilian.The exhibition, which is introduced by a 15 minute audio-visual presentation, deals with St. Kilian and his times, his work, martyrdom and subsequent cult.It brings to life in maps, photographs, statuettes, manuscript facsimiles and art

reproductions, a glorious era in Irish Church history and the work of Irish missionaries in Europe in the 6th and 7th centuries.The exhibition also traces the development of gaelic script for the ogham writing of the 4th to the 7th centuries and the Wurzburg Glosses (the earliest example of written Irish c.750) to the illuminated script of the book of Kells.The Centre also houses a craft shop where the visitor may select artistic items of interest from a range of locally produced work.Adjoining the craft shop is a comfortable dining area where one may relax over lunch or coffee.
